The Tyranny of Female #40 and Cinderella's Coup (1996–2000)
In 1996, as part of the wolf reintroduction program in Yellowstone National Park, the Druid Peak Pack was established from five wolves relocated from Canada. She-wolf #40 claimed the role of ruling alpha female, ushering in an era defined by ruthless dominance and relentless cruelty. Female #40 subjected the pack's females to daily oppression—expelling her own mother, humiliating her quiet younger sister (#42), denying her the right to breed, and killing her pups. This mistreatment led tracking scientists to nickname the victimized sister "Cinderella".
When the noble male wolf #21 joined as the alpha male, he tried to temper the tension, but #40's cruelty reached its peak in the spring of 2000 when she attacked the females' dens once again. In a historic turning point, female #42 (Cinderella) reached her breaking point and united the pack's females to resist the tyranny. She led a fierce counterattack that ended in the death of female #40 and the crowning of Cinderella #42 as the new alpha female, embraced with jubilation by the entire pack.
"When tyranny pushes past the limits of endurance, meekness ignites a revolution that uproots ancient thrones."
